MY BUSINESS PROCESS REENGINEERING BOOKS
These two books allowed me to start my own consulting practice. The first one was the number 40 best-selling business book in 1994. Here is a link on Amazon to both books, but you can find them on other sites as well. Note that I no longer get royalties from these books.

AUTOMATING BUSINESS PROCESS REENGINEERING: BREAKING THE TQM BARRIER
From the Publisher: This volume introduces — for managers and technicians alike — two innovative concepts designed to augment the basically non-scientific and philosophical Total Quality Management (TQM) and Continuous Improvement approaches to business improvement (CI) — 1) Process Engineering — the application of systems analysis techniques to the study of human processes, and 2) Computer Aided Process Re-engineering (CAPR) Technology — a highly graphical, object-oriented technology designed to facilitate modeling and simulation of business processes. CAPR technology provides the capability of predicting the effect of process changes in cost, time-to- completion, quality, etc., before an organization implements them — a capability not available with traditional CI and TQM concepts. Explains how the power of modeling and simulation can be used to create effective changes in business process, and how costly counter-productive or non-productive changes can be avoided. Offers practical examples of process and quality improvement, and a “how to” guide for getting started in computer aided process improvement.

AUTOMATING BUSINESS PROCESS RE-ENGINEERING: USING THE POWER OF VISUAL SIMULATION STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE AND PROFIT (2ND EDITION)
From the Publisher: It’s about the capability to drive intelligent enterprise decision-making, enabling users to make strategic business decisions based on predictive outcomes through the use of simulation and modeling, impacting every key functional area of an organization. The power of simulation and modelling is clearly illustrated in case study after case study in the book, and demonstrates how widespread its use could and should be as a decision-making tool to improve performance and profit and increase the competitive advantage of an organization.
User Review: A new culture in the management of changes: In this book is developed the way to manage changes in engineering processes, demonstrating the power of simulation really. Hansen has obtained the wanted theory-practice binomial, which is not common in business literature. I think that a phrase that summarizes properly his work in this book is: “if an engineer doesn’t measure, can’t control anything”, although surely Hansen would say “business man” instead of “engineer”.

MY KAYAKING BOOKS
In the few years I’ve been whitewater kayaking I’ve discovered that a lot of people love kayaking in general. If you look at billboards and TV commercials, you’ll see more and more references to kayaks. It is a very popular sport as well as a very social sport. You can put as much or as little effort into kayaking as you like and still have a great time. Like everything else, though, the more effort you make the more enjoyment you will have. I believe that having as much information as you can before you start making the effort will make the learning process go more smoothly, especially when you are starting off at an older age. I wrote this book to encourage “mature” people to investigate whitewater kayaking and to provide as much information as I can so they have a better idea of what to expect than I did when I began. I’m going to present a lot of information that will speed up the process of getting into some real rapids. I’ll also address the cost of whitewater kayaking which, once you have your initial set of equipment, is not that great—the rivers are pretty much free, after all.
