Review of the Body Helix X-3 Paddles

OVERVIEW

In my quest for paddles that push the boundaries of innovation, the Body Helix X-3 Pro and X-3 Lite have truly stood out in the crowded market. Building on the success of the X-1 series, these paddles introduce cutting-edge technology and unique features that set them apart.

Similar to the previously reviewed X-1 paddles, both the X-3 Pro and X-3 Lite come equipped with a set of weights that can be easily applied to any part of the paddle. This feature eliminates the need for measuring lead tape, simplifying customization.

Diverging from the X-1 series, the standout feature of the X-3 paddles is their Kevlar/Carbon face, a pioneering combination in the pickleball paddle landscape. According to Body Helix, this unique face composition offers several advantages, including enhanced forgiveness, exceptional durability, impact resistance, and vibration dampening. This makes the paddles appealing to players concerned about arm fatigue and overuse injuries.

Another notable distinction lies in the core construction. The X-3 Pro boasts a Small Cell Polypropylene Honeycomb core, while the X-3 Lite features a Large Cell Polypropylene Honeycomb core. The differences in core construction play a pivotal role in the performance, as detailed in the individual reviews below.

X-3 PRO Specs:

  • Weight: 8.8 oz, optimized for power.
  • Thickness: 18 MM
  • Handle Length: 6”, facilitating a true two-handed backhand.
  • Grip Size: 4.25”, accommodating various hand sizes.
  • Total Length: 16.5”, providing extended reach for crucial shots.
  • Width: 7.5”, balancing coverage and agility.
  • Kevlar/Carbon blend Paddle Face
  • Small Cell Polypropylene Honeycomb Core
  • Aramid Center
  • Thermoformed Unibody Design
  • 360-degree Foam-Injection

In simple terms, Aramid fibers, constituting the center, are renowned for being lightweight, high-strength, high-modulus, heat-resistant, and corrosion-resistant. The thickness of the paddle, at 18 MM, may seem substantial, but its design, coupled with the weight, allows for powerful shots.

Despite my personal preference for thinner paddles, the X-3 Pro surprised me with its ability to generate substantial power while maintaining impressive control, possibly attributed to its Small Cell Polypropylene core. This core type, known for its consistent and uniform structure, ensures predictability in shot performance.

Body Helix categorizes the X-3 Pro as suitable for advanced players, specifically those rated 5.0 and above. As a player ranging between 3.9 to 4.4 (depending on the rating system you look at), I found this paddle to be exceptional for my game, offering both power and control, with the added benefit of being remarkably quiet during play.

Noteworthy is the absence of grit on the paddle, yet it allowed me to generate considerable side spin and top spin. This could potentially be attributed to the unique face composition. Despite lacking grit, the paddle retained its performance characteristics without any wear-off concerns.

X-3 LITE Specs:

  • Weight: 8.0 oz, optimized for power.
  • Thickness: 16 MM
  • Handle Length: 6”, facilitating a true two-handed backhand.
  • Grip Size: 4.25”, accommodating various hand sizes.
  • Total Length: 16.5”, providing extended reach for crucial shots.
  • Width: 7.5”, offering an ideal balance between coverage and agility.
  • Kevlar/Carbon blend Paddle Face
  • Large Cell PP Honeycomb Core
  • Thermoformed Unibody Design
  • 360-degree Foam-Injection

The X-3 Lite shares the same shape as its Pro counterpart but differs in weight, thickness, and core construction. At 8.0 oz and 16 MM thick, this paddle is slightly lighter and thinner than the X-3 Pro. The core of the X-3 Lite features a Large Cell Polypropylene Honeycomb construction, which, according to Body Helix, imparts a softer and more controlled feel for precision shots. However, it may produce more noise and vibrations, offering enhanced shot feedback.

In my experience playing six high-level pickleball games, three with the X-3 Pro and three with the X-3 Lite, I observed nuanced differences. The X-3 Lite allowed me to generate slightly more power, while the X-3 Pro offered a bit more control. Both paddles proved to be excellent choices, pushing the boundaries of paddle technology. I anticipate that the industry will likely follow suit in incorporating similar innovations soon.

Both paddles demonstrated exceptional quietness during play, especially when compared to other Kevlar-faced paddles I’ve used in the past. This characteristic adds to the overall appeal, as noise reduction contributes to a more focused and enjoyable playing experience..

This is going to be a bit technical. It is a description of how the X-3 paddles are constructed.

The X3 is a 13-layer composite paddle:

  • 1 texture resin layer
  • 1 Kevlar/Carbon hybrid weave surface
  • 2 T700 Toray Carbon layers
  • 1 Layer of fabric between carbon and Polypropylene
  • 1 Layer of Polypropylene
  • 1 Layer of Aramid
  • 1 Layer of Polypropylene
  • 1 Layer of fabric between carbon and PP
  • 2 T700 Toray Carbon layers
  • 1 Kevlar/Carbon hybrid weave surface
  • 1 texture resin layer

I would love to see similar information about other paddles.

Moving forward, I plan to continue using both paddles, selecting one over the other depending on the opponent I’m facing. This flexibility ensures that I can optimize my performance based on specific playing conditions and opponents, highlighting the versatility of both the X-3 Pro and X-3 Lite in catering to different playing styles and preferences.
