HUDEF Mage Pro Gen2 Paddle Review

UPDATE

Yesterday, when I wrote this review, I had tested the paddle under controlled conditions. Today I played several games with it (in sometimes “uncontrolled” conditions). My original opinion was that it was of average power, but I have changed my mind – the ball does not fly off the face (pop) but it has a lot of sustained power on serves and drives. It is still great around the net and has a soft feel to it.

Introduction

Hudef continues to lead the pack in the ongoing refinement and enhancement of pickleball paddles. The new Mage Pro Gen2 exemplifies this dedication by incorporating the latest technologies, making it a standout Gen 2 paddle.

Analysis

I’ve conducted extensive research on the evolution of pickleball paddles, categorizing them from Gen 1 to Gen 3 and beyond. Generally, a paddle that is thermoformed and injected with foam is classified as Gen 2. However, many experts overlook the significance of hybrid shapes and weaved faces. The Mage Pro Gen2, with its thermoformed unibody construction and foam-injected edges, fits perfectly into the Gen 2 category.

  • Face: Toray T700 Raw Carbon/Kevlar weave face
  • Construction: Thermoformed edges injected with foam, unibody design
  • Shape: Hybrid
  • Weight: 8.0 oz ± 0.2 oz (mine came in at 8.0 ounces)

  • Length: 16.1″
  • Width: Upper 7.8″ & bottom 7.64″
  • Thickness: 0.55″ (14mm) & 0.63″ (16mm)

Performance

One of the most striking aspects of the Mage Pro Gen2 is its combination of power and a soft feel. This could be attributed to the Kevlar/carbon weave face, the cushioned grip, or the thermoformed, foam-injected construction. The paddle delivers virtually no vibrations, even when hitting hard shots.

At the net, the Mage Pro Gen2 excels in third shot drops, dinks, and fast-paced exchanges. Its hybrid shape makes it slightly top-heavy, which positions the sweet spot above the center, enhancing power and topspin. When serving, I could consistently generate both topspin and sidespin, likely due to the paddle’s unique weave face rather than any inherent grit.

Despite the light swing weight (115), I found it easy to generate pace on serves and ground strokes. The elongated handle also made it perfect for my tow-handed backhand.

Additionally, I found it easy to execute underspin returns, again (in my opinion) thanks to the weave face.

Conclusion

The HUDEF Mage Pro Gen2 is a top-tier paddle that combines innovative technology with superior performance. Its blend of power, soft feel, and spin capabilities make it an excellent choice for players looking to elevate their game.
